Where passion meets purpose

“HANDBALL FOR ALL” is a comprehensive project that aims to promote the sport of handball within the broader landscape of sports projects.

Handball is a dynamic and exciting sport, yet it is often underrepresented in the sporting world, especially in our country.

This project aims to bridge this gap by focusing on different aspects of handball, from grassroots development to elite level competition.

Our values are: Respect (Heshima) - Love (Upendo) - Mutual Help (Kusaidiana)

Our mission: to empower young people through sport, education and community involvement.

Promoting holistic development

This includes not only sporting skills but also character and life skills. We want our participants to grow personally both on and off the pitch.

Education through sport

Curiosity, discipline and the joy of lifelong learning are encouraged through educational initiatives in sports programmes.

Respect and cohesion

We promote values such as love, respect and mutual support for a community where each individual is valued. This leads to shared success.

Making a positive impact

We are actively involved in local communities to reinforce the sense of responsibility that already exists. We support initiatives that help people in need.

Fostering excellence

We encourage the development of individual potential through coaching and mentoring. The aim is to achieve excellence in sport, education and personal development.

Help with youth development and coaching:
Help coach youth teams or development programmes if you have a relevant coaching qualification.

Socialise and build relationships:
You will have the opportunity to interact with players, coaches, officials and other volunteers. During the week you will assist at the Goal for Goals centres or run your own training sessions with children and young people in schools and extra-curricular activities. At weekends, you might help organise competitions.

Fundraising and sponsorship activation:
Help us raise funds or activate sponsors to support the handball organisation financially.

Public Relations, Advertising and Marketing:
You will help distribute promotional material and flyers to raise awareness of upcoming handball events, collect feedback from participants or help update social media to promote events. Talk to fans to get them excited about the sport.

Set up and organise events:
You can help set up the handball court, organise equipment and put up signage. You can also help set up seating for spectators and help with security. You will also help with check-in, informing players of the schedule and escorting them to their assigned areas.

First priority:

1. GO! for Goals (G4G) – Sports Programme
Thursdays and Fridays from 15:30 to 18:00
Supporting the planning and implementation of sports programmes for G4G youth in the sports of handball, volleyball and dodgeball (depending on sporting ability). The programmes will be carried out in collaboration with the G4G youth coaches. Knowledge in the creation of sports programmes (planning, implementation, follow-up, etc.) is helpful.

2. GO! for Goals educational programme
Saturday from 8:00 to 12:30
Support the planning and implementation of educational programmes for G4G youth, including language and maths lessons. The programme will be run in collaboration with the G4G youth leaders.

3. GO! for Goals – Tournaments
You will help to plan and run G4G tournaments. These take place 1-2 times every 3 months. The timing of the tournaments is flexible and depends on your own schedule. However, please try to maintain the desired regularity.

Secondary activities (optional)

1. Teaching assistance at Mlamleni Primary School
Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 2pm
You will teach and/or assist with English and/or physical education at the primary school. There is flexibility if you are only able or willing to work certain days of the week.

2. Teacher training at Mlamleni Primary School
Wednesdays from 12pm to 3pm
You will take part in the weekly training sessions that take place every Wednesday at the school. You will work with the teachers and school administration on a variety of topics. These sessions may include

  • English lessons for teachers
  • Conversation training with teachers
  • Working on curriculum development and/or classroom activities
  • Teaching life skills

Your active involvement in these areas will of course depend on your personal skills.

3. Coaching workshops
You will assist in the planning and delivery of coaching workshops in various sports for local coaches in Mlamleni or throughout Dar es Salaam. Coaching can be flexible depending on your skills and schedule.

4) Additional activities
Depending on your interests, skills and schedule, a range of additional activities can be offered. These could include short-term sports training in other locations, artistic activities such as painting murals, or professional training and development for the parents of the children and young people on the programme.

Please note that days and times may vary depending on the project and task.

Pick-up from the airport

The project mentor will pick you up at the airport. Depending on your arrival time, you may be taken directly to Mlamleni (approximately 1 hour drive) or you may choose to stay in Dar es Salaam for the first day/night. There is a nice, safe hotel near the airport where you can spend the first night. It offers air conditioning, breakfast and a private bathroom for about 10 USD. The project also organises transport back to the airport.

Accommodation

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to stay with local families or individuals. This is a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and community. However, it is advisable to give the project at least one month’s notice to confirm a host family arrangement.

Starting time

In general, sports coaching assignments can start at any time of the year. However, please note the following project information:

  • Early January: The school year starts in mid-January, so only a minimal programme will be offered during the first week of January.
  • Late March / early April: Schools have a 2-week Easter holiday at the end of March and beginning of April, depending on when Easter falls. The G4G sports programme will take place during the holidays as students are still available. However, it is not possible to help with lessons or teacher training as the teachers are on holiday for 2 weeks. April is also the rainy season. Programmes continue but are weather dependent.
  • June: The school closes for a month in June and reopens in early July. The G4G programme continues, but teachers are not in school.
  • December: The school closes in mid-December for the rest of the year and reopens in early January.

General

The Coastal region of Tanzania is characterised by cultural diversity, rich heritage and a mix of ethnic and religious groups, with the Swahili people being the majority. But you’ll also find communities of Chaga, Zigua, Zaramo and others. Each group has its own language, customs and traditions. Swahili is widely spoken and understood. Swahili culture is renowned for its rich history, art, music and cuisine. Traditional Swahili architecture, with its distinctive wooden carvings and Arabic influences, can be seen in the region’s coastal towns. Traditional Swahili dress is colourful and flowing. Women often wear kangas or kitenge, which are bright pieces of fabric used as wraps or dresses. Men may wear kanzu, a long robe, especially for religious or formal occasions.

Islam is the predominant religion in the coastal region, and you’ll find numerous mosques and Islamic schools throughout the area. There are also Christian communities and religious diversity is generally tolerated.

In addition to its cultural richness, the coastal region boasts stunning natural beauty, including pristine beaches, coral reefs and tropical forests. The coastal towns and islands, such as Zanzibar and Mafia Island, are popular tourist destinations.

Learn a few phrases in the local language (such as Swahili) or carry a dictionary to help you communicate with the locals. Also familiarise yourself with the culture, customs and traditions of the area you are visiting. Respect the local culture and follow protocols when visiting religious or sacred sites.

Weather and climate

The coastal region has a tropical climate due to its proximity to the equator. This means that temperatures remain relatively warm throughout the year. It is hot and humid throughout the year, with high humidity levels especially during the rainy season. Daytime temperatures often range from 25°C to 35°C (77°F to 95°F), with coastal areas being slightly cooler than inland areas.

The region typically has two main seasons. The long rainy season usually lasts from March to May, with heavy rainfall and occasional thunderstorms. The region becomes lush and green during this time. The dry season typically runs from June to October and is characterised by sunny and relatively dry weather. This is the main tourist season due to the pleasant weather.

There is a short rainy season, often referred to as the ‘short rains’, from November to December. Although not as intense as the long rains, it brings occasional showers.

Health & Safety

  • Follow all instructions given by the government or security authorities. This includes respecting the laws of the country and following immigration procedures.
  • Keep copies of your passport, visa and other important documents in a safe place and make extra copies.
  • Do not visit unsafe or high-risk areas, especially at night.
  • Avoid places with a history of crime or conflict.
  • Be careful with your valuables such as mobile phones, jewellery and cash.
  • Do not give out personal or financial details to strangers.
  • If you are travelling by car, familiarise yourself with road safety rules and always wear a seatbelt.
