Find general questions and answers about COACH ABROAD.

What are the costs of volunteering, what is included and what is not?

Volunteers pay a contribution to cover accommodation and meals and supports project costs. Flights, visas, vaccinations, insurance and personal expenses are not included.

What does COACH ABROAD offer me?

We provide volunteer sports coaches for social sports projects abroad and helps with applications, stays and project presentations.

What does the host project offer me and what services are included in the programme?

The host project usually provides accommodation, meals, airport transfers and local orientation. For more details, see the project profile.

What is the COACH ABROAD “Badge of Trust” in bronze, silver or gold?

The "Badge of Trust" evaluates social sport projects according to transparency, communication and sustainability. It provides guidance for volunteers and motivation for projects.

Why do social projects need sports volunteers?

We match community sports projects with volunteer coaches to strengthen and sustain sports programmes in disadvantaged communities.

Why do we recommend a placement of at least 2 months?

Volunteering abroad for at least two months gives you more time and space for deeper personal experiences, more intensive cultural understanding and, above all, more sustainable and goal-oriented project work.

Are there any restrictions in choosing my project?

There are no general restrictions on the choice of projects, apart from sporting qualifications. Any requirements such as gender or minimum age are project-specific.

How does the application process work, how can I apply?

Choose your preferred project and complete the application form. Prepare for our online interview and then submit all required documents.

What are the requirements for sports volunteering abroad?

Your sporting ability is our top priority. Openness, a hands-on mentality and motivation are important. Depending on the project, a coaching qualification or experience in sports management may be an advantage.

What happens if my application is not accepted?

There is no guarantee of placement, but refusals are rare. We offer alternatives if the project is full or the project specific requirements are not met.

When should I apply and is there an application deadline?

There is no fixed application deadline. However, we recommend applying at least 4 months before the start of the project due to visa applications, flight bookings or necessary vaccinations.

Why do I need an (extended) police clearance certificate?

An extended police clearance certificate (in English, not more than 3 months old) is required to ensure safety and trustworthiness when working with children and young people.

Are there other volunteers in the project and can I get in touch with former volunteers?

Whether there are other volunteers in the project depends on the size of the project, the places available and the popularity of the country. We share experiences, but contact with former volunteers is voluntary.

What are “future activities” in the project description?

"Future Activities are additional sports that extend the existing sports programme to get more children and young people involved in sport.

What are my tasks as a volunteer?

You will focus on training children and young people, helping with fundraising and publicity, planning events, organising workshops and advising the project management.

Will I be supported by a local contact or coach?

Yes, you will be supported by a project mentor. He or she will introduce you to the team, explain how they work and help you with any questions or complications.

Will I have time off during my placement to explore the country and travel?

Yes, but it should be discussed in advance. Make use of weekends, school holidays and free time, but don't forget that your commitment to the project takes priority.

Living in your community

Information about host family life and the new community.

Can I use public transport?

Yes, you can use public transport, but check with the project manager or your host family. It is safer during the day and in groups. Use better alternatives at night.

Do I have to or can I cook in my host family?

Depending on what the host family provides, you may be able to cook for yourself in some families. Be aware of cultural customs. You should clarify any special dietary requirements in advance.

What can I do on weekends and in my free time?

Use your free time to get to know local life, go on excursions and spend time with your colleagues and host family. Be aware of safety and cultural customs.

What happens when I arrive at the airport?

Transfer from/to the airport is usually arranged by the project. You will be met by a project representative or a trusted person. Inform them of your flight details and any delays.

What kind of environment will I live in as a coach and what can I expect from the community?

The projects are usually located in deprived or rural areas, and the training and living conditions are often very different. Good preparation for the new environment is important.

Will I receive information about my host family before I arrive and can I contact them?

Detailed information about the host family is often only available at short notice. The projects organise the accommodation and have to take various factors into account.
