What are the costs of volunteering, what is included and what is not?

Summary

  • Volunteers pay a fee to cover their accommodation costs and to support the projects.
  • The fee covers food, transport and living costs with the host family, as well as local project costs.
  • Projects calculate their own costs, which vary according to country, region and project needs.
  • A share of the fee goes to COACH ABROAD to cover costs and ensure the sustainability and quality of the programme.
  • Total costs can be found on each project page.
  • Included services such as accommodation, meals and airport transfers vary from project to project.
  • Daily travel to the project, special diets, etc. may incur additional costs.
  • Not included are flights, visa fees, travel and medical insurance, vaccinations, personal activities and travel.

As a volunteer sports coach, you will pay a contribution to cover the costs of your stay and to support the local projects in carrying out their activities. Depending on the agreement, your contribution will also be used to buy food and cook for your host family, pay for transport or other things related to your daily life with your host family and your involvement with the local project.

The projects think about the costs in advance and calculate them themselves. The costs for each project may vary depending on the country, region, scope of services and specific project standards and requirements. For example, a project in a large city such as Cape Town may have higher costs than a social sports project in a rural village in Kenya, where the cost of living is lower. In general, we encourage project managers to plan as realistically as possible to avoid cost traps later on, but also to avoid increasing costs unnecessarily. The aim is to ensure that projects are sustainable and that host families have a regular income.

Your contribution also includes a placement fee for COACH ABROAD to ensure that our service is cost-covering and, above all, sustainable. This includes covering our running costs as well as our ongoing work with the projects themselves, such as regular meetings with mentors about the progress of the project or the organisation of an additional contact person in the event of problems arising within a project or host family. In addition, social projects can be visited by us or an independent auditor on a cost-covering basis to verify the COACH ABROAD „Badge of Trust“ criteria. This serves the purpose of quality assurance and benefits both you as a sports volunteer and the projects.

The total cost of the project can be found directly on the project page. Please note that only full months are charged. You should also check each project to see what services are included in the price, such as type of accommodation, meals or any airport transfers. There may also be costs for daily transport to and from your accommodation and project location. Sometimes projects are within walking distance, sometimes you will need to use public transport because your host family lives a little further away. If you have a special dietary requirement that your host family cannot foresee or usually cannot provide, you also need to consider this as an additional expense for you. Please mention this directly in our online interview.

Please also note that your flight costs, any visa fees, travel and health insurance premiums, necessary vaccinations, personal activities and travel are not included in the project costs. You will need to budget for these costs separately.
