Will I have time off during my placement to explore the country and travel?

Summary

  • In general, we encourage you to travel and experience new cultures.
  • Travel plans during your voluntary service should be discussed in advance.
  • Any specific plans to travel should be clearly stated when applying.
  • Free time and weekends can be used for activities.
  • School holidays are also a good opportunity to explore the country.
  • When travelling, be aware of important information on health, safety and risk management.

Please note

  • Your commitment to the project should be a priority; exact working hours will be determined locally.
  • You will also be expected to work at weekends, especially for larger activities such as tournaments.

If you would like to travel for an extended period of time during your volunteering placement, please discuss this with us in advance or with your project supervisor immediately upon your arrival, so that we can better plan your placement.

If you have specific plans during the application process, please let us know during the interview so that we can advise you and the project in advance. There are many opportunities to explore the country, especially during the school holidays.

Of course, you can also spend your free time or weekends exploring your new home or country. To give you a better overview of your daily schedule, the expected times are specified in the project profile and will be defined in more detail with your mentor after your arrival. During these times you will be expected to work on the project. Of course, the project or your work on the project should be your first priority.

Remember that the project of your choice and the children and young people themselves are planning with you. You will also get the most out of your personal involvement in the project if you are committed to it. This is especially true when planning and running tournaments or extra-curricular activities. We want you to be responsible, keep your appointments and commit to your time as a sports project volunteer.

However, we encourage you to travel: Discover new cultures, meet new people or visit national parks with their magnificent flora and fauna.

Work in your project

Are there other volunteers in the project and can I get in touch with former volunteers?

Whether there are other volunteers in the project depends on the size of the project, the places available and the popularity of the country. We share experiences, but contact with former volunteers is voluntary.

What are “future activities” in the project description?

"Future Activities are additional sports that extend the existing sports programme to get more children and young people involved in sport.

What are my tasks as a volunteer?

You will focus on training children and young people, helping with fundraising and publicity, planning events, organising workshops and advising the project management.

Will I be supported by a local contact or coach?

Yes, you will be supported by a project mentor. He or she will introduce you to the team, explain how they work and help you with any questions or complications.
