“Healthy Choices Through Sports” (HESPO) is a youth-driven, non-political, non-profit and non-religious community-based organisation working in Siaya County, Kenya since 2022.

We work with communities and schools to achieve our mission of Sports for Development, which focuses on the following Sustainable Development Goals Economic Empowerment, Quality Education, Good Health and Well-being, Climate Action, Gender Equality, Water and Sanitation, and Cooperation and Partnership.

To achieve our vision, we will train community coaches and teachers as mentors and facilitators in these aspects of community development through play-based methodologies that address the diverse and unique needs of the beneficiaries.

Nicola Scholl from COACH ABROAD together with the project mentor and project staff during a visit to Kenya.
Visiting social sport projects in person is not always possible, but it is part of our transparency initiative. Nicola Scholl from COACH ABROAD visited the Healthy Choices Through Sport project in Kenya and spoke with the project mentor and staff about future strategies and opportunities for sustainable support.

General

The area is cold in April and October and hot the rest of the year, with motorcycles being the main mode of transport and minibuses and buses used to get around town. The area is mostly flat and neighbouring areas are prone to flooding during heavy rains. It is close to Lake Victoria and the home of former US President Barack Obama.

Health & Safety

  • This place is close to the Yala swamp, so it is important to bring mosquito repellent.
  • People are friendly and hospitable. No major safety concerns.
  • The water is salty and volunteers will need to buy drinking water regularly.
