Empower children from the Berg River communities in Piketberg through sport

A girl and a boy simultaneously throw a handball at a goal with a goalkeeper for training purposes on a concrete school sports field, under the eyes of the sports project leader.

k.A.

Since the establishment of our registered non-profit organisation, the Piketberg Sports Development Foundation (PSDF), we have seen a great need for sports and cultural development in the region, which covers an area of 4400 square kilometres and is home to more than 16,000 households.

Of the approximately 62,000 people in this community, just under a quarter (approximately 25%) are under the age of 14. This is the primary target group on which we focus our efforts in the various villages and towns of this municipality, which includes Redelinghuys, Eendekuil, Aurora, Velddrif, Porterville, Dwarskersbos, Laaiplek, Goedverwacht and Wittewater. Our aim is to contribute to the great sporting nation of South Africa by producing the next generation of sports stars / Springboks / Bafana Bafana…

We recognise the potential that our children have and it is our duty to help make their sporting and cultural dreams come true.

Primary objectives

PSDF focuses on facilitating the sporting and cultural development of children from the Berg River and surrounding farming communities through the establishment of partnerships with local authorities, government departments and other service providers. PSDF aims to facilitate educational training programmes for children and young people to keep them active during the school holidays. We are here to help young people explore their hidden potential through sports and cultural development training.

Secondary objectives

PSDF focuses on the development of our children and youth in the following areas: Sports, Tourism, Agriculture, Arts and Culture and Technical Skills, Health and Welfare and Soft Skills. We are interested in implementing and sustaining job creation projects.

Sports Coaching

Coaching clinics, workshops and tournaments for golf, netball, football, rugby, chess and athletics.

Fun & Games

Games are a great way to engage children and many of the games played in our communities today are indigenous Khoi-San games such as Kennetjie, Wolf-Wolf-Hoe-Laat-Dit, 3-Stokkies, 3-Blikkies, Skululu.

Life Skills

Children are taught the values of strength of character, sense of purpose, courage, determination, perseverance, individual distinction and collective action, morality, ethical responsibility to self and community.

Mentoring

PSDF is committed to investing in the future of our communities by taking young people by the hand and guiding them towards a more holistic way of life.

Cultural Awareness

Through our cultural awareness programmes, the PSDF recognises the deep connection the people of this region have with their Khoi-San ancestors; honouring the local stories of the elders is one way of instilling age-old, trusted morals.

General

Piketberg is a small town and farming community surrounded by beautiful mountains and several farms, including wine farms. Volunteers can hike and run in the mountains. It is also close to the Groote Winterhoek National Park and several other mountain areas and campsites. Although Piketberg is not a climbing area, it is on the Cape of Good Hope Route and close to the Cederberg Mountains, which are world famous for climbing, bouldering and hiking.

Piketberg has a gym and several sports clubs including rugby, cricket and a running club. There are several shops in the Piketberg Mall. Talk to the locals and ask around, you might be surprised at what Piketberg has to offer. Once a month, on the last Saturday of the month, the Bo-Piketberg Farmers’ Market is held at the top of the mountain from 9 am to 12 pm.

There is a network of small public transport, such as minibuses, which take people to work and into town. Otherwise people walk, cycle or hitch-hike. Piketberg is 80% black, Afrikaans speaking and a very friendly community.

Health & Safety

  • In summer, temperatures in Piketberg can be very high, up to 40°C (winters are rainy, usually 3 days a week).
  • Do not walk the streets after 10pm.
  • Always listen to what host families, colleagues or friends tell you about the area.
  • You can drink tap water, but it is safer to boil it first.
  • Wash your hands and follow general hygiene advice.
