General
Kenyans are generally overly friendly and welcome visitors wholeheartedly, which can sometimes be too much if you are not used to being the centre of attention.
Dress code: You should wear clothes that are not too revealing and that cover most of your body.
The project is in a low income community where you can experience poverty and middle income at the same time. Our roads are not so good, but we have electricity, water and habitable houses.
We have different means of transport like Matatu, some very colourful and some with very loud music, we have buses, Boda Boda which is a motorbike, TukTuk and also private cars/taxis.
We have four seasons in Kenya, the hot season which is supposed to be from January to March, followed by short rains from March to June, the cold season from July to September and heavy rains from October to December, but due to climate change it is a bit hard to predict the seasons.
We are close to the only national park in a city in the world, Nairobi National Park. In your free time you can visit the city of Nairobi which is 1 hour drive away.
Health & Safety
- In Machakos area our source of water is dug boreholes, the water is a bit salty and therefore we can only use it for cleaning but we also have water points where we buy drinking water. We have electricity in most households.
- The area is safe but you should be careful not to walk alone at night.
- Our public transport is safe and cheap. You should always be careful not to be overcharged. There are various means of transport from buses, boda boda motorbikes, matatu mini buses.
- We are not a malaria zone area, no lake and rivers near us.
